Botox and Fillers Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox, and other similar neurotoxins such as Dysport® and Xeomin®, are injectable medications derived from a purified neurotoxin. When injected into key areas, the compound temporarily reduces muscle activity that contributes to the look of wrinkling. Your face stays smooth and youthful every time you make a facial expression, such as a smile, frown, or squint.
Botox is effective on the:
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Frown lines between the brows
- Crow’s feet around the eyes
Dysport and Xeomin are FDA-approved for frown lines only.
The dermatology team may also use Botox for off-label applications such as:
- Smoothing lip lines and bunny lines
- Diminishing corded neck bands
- Improving the overall appearance of the skin
- Smoothing chin dimpling
- Lifting the corners of the mouth
- Softening a square jawline
- Correcting a gummy smile
The effects of neurotoxin injections are temporary, lasting about 3-4 months. You can schedule retreatments, however, to maintain your look. Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin treatments require short appointments that last less than 30 minutes and require no downtime. Your results start to appear in 24-48 hours, with full results noticeable after about seven days.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectables that diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face or even hands. As you get older, your face loses subcutaneous fat, which gives you a plump, full, and smooth look. Your skin also stretches slightly, due to gravity and environmental factors, and produces less collagen and hyaluronic acid, compounds that provide your skin with strength, smoothness, and hydration.
Dermal fillers help restore compounds that keep your skin looking hydrated and plump, effectively erasing lines and wrinkles.
What are the benefits of dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers can add volume and smooth out lines to enhance your natural features and smooth wrinkles. Idaho Skin Institute uses dermal fillers to:
- Plump thin lips
- Enhance shallow contours
- Soften facial creases and wrinkles
- Improve the appearance of recessed scars
- Reconstruct contour deformities in the face
- Decrease or remove the shadow of the lower lids
- Add volume to hands
Dermal fillers also enhance the effects of aesthetic facial surgeries.
What dermal fillers are available?
Idaho Skin Institute offers a full array of dermal fillers:
Radiesse®
This filler contains calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a gel that creates a foundation for lifting and volumizing your skin. As the microspheres naturally disintegrate, collagen develops in the treated areas to maintain your look.
Belotero Balance®
Belotero Balance is a hyaluronic acid filler with unique properties that allow it to adapt within your skin for soft, even correction.
Restylane®
Restylane is a hyaluronic acid filler that replaces lost volume and restores youthful contours. Restylane Refyne® is for laugh lines and Restylane Lyft® smooth lines, lift cheeks, and adds volume to hands.
Revanesse® VersaTM
Revanesse® VersaTM is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler that can treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, including nasolabial folds.
Can I combine Botox and fillers?
Your provider may combine dermal fillers and Botox, or other neurotoxin injectables, to give you the most comprehensive results. As each dermal filler and Botox-style compounds have different applications and benefits, combining them may be the best way to address all of your skin’s signs of aging.
